Did you know that transport is the second biggest cause of pollution in Europe?

This is why significant efforts are needed to achieve the European goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as set out in the European Green Deal.

The theme of the European Mobility Week 2023 (16^th-22^nd September) is going to reflect on energy consumption, with a specific focus on urban mobility having increasing costs for the community not only in environmental terms.

Obviously, the challenge to be faced in the coming years concerns not only urban transport; it involves everyone: from individuals to companies.

The protagonists involved are thinking about actions to be put in place to reduce environmental impact of transport, first of which is encouraging the use of hybrid or electric vehicles.

However, there are those who still have doubts about the actual validity of these new engines.

A misconception is that electric vehicles – given the production and management of batteries – are not as sustainable as combustion engine vehicles.

According to recent research by The International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT), considering the entire life cycle of vehicles, emissions avoided by an electric vehicle amount to approximately 19-34% in India, 37-45% in China, and up to 66-69% in Europe.

At the moment, in Italy, there are 45,210 public charging points for electric and plug-in hybrid cars, and 203,873 full electric cars (registrations in 2023 have increased by 30%).

These number are expected to increase thanks to a strong growth trend in the implementation of charging points, which in the Centre-South of Italy and on the Islands are still scarce and difficult to access (Motus-E https://www.motus-e.org/ ).

We at VINCI Energies Italia, keeping faith with our commitment to the environment, are working to optimize the environmental impact on the movement of colleagues.

The largest source of CO2 emissions in our Group is still represented by the company fleet. We currently have 260 vehicles of which:

• 4 Full electric
• 6 Plug-in hybrid
• 66 Mild hybrid
• 3 Full hybrid

However, we are aware that to reduce our environmental impact it is not enough to invest only in fleet electrification.

It is necessary to implement actions which in the long term allow us to contain consumption and emissions, but which are also flexible – given the rapid evolution of technology – and in line with the needs of workers who use company cars.

This is why we have long chosen to accompany the management of the company fleet with a training course that aims to build a culture of individual responsibility.

Thanks to eco-training meetings, which include a theoretical part and a practical part, we transmit awareness of how much driving behavior has an impact on the environment as well as road safety.

The sustainability of mobility, in fact, is a goal that can only be achieved through collective commitment: from the careful choices of vehicles, to responsible driving behavior.
